Die ersten beiden Wochen nach der Geburt der Welpen scheinen zuerst recht unspektakulär zu sein. Die Hauptbeschäftigung der Welpen besteht aus Fressen und Schlafen, daher nennt man diese Phase auch die vegetative Phase. Die Welpen handeln rein aus ihrem Instinkt, dabei sind Augen und Ohren noch fest verschlossen und auch der Geruchssinn ist wenig ausgeprägt. Durch die Pendelbewegungen mit dem Kopf finden die Welpen schnell den Weg zur Zitze, wo sie trinken, bis sie satt sind. Danach schlafen sie wieder, bis zur nächsten Mahlzeit.
